Hi all, I'm John K, designer of Picture This. We've been working on it for a couple years now and are ready to start getting people's opinions on it, so give it a play and let us know what you think.
Given that you're reading this, you're one of the first players of our game while it's in beta form, and will have a huge impact on what it ultimately becomes. We really want to hear your feedback and ideas, as well as any bugs you find. Feel free to post in here, or you can email me directly at john@strangeloopgames.com.
This game is extremely community oriented (one of the most community oriented games out there I would say) and I'd like these forums to turn into a place where the most frequent users can chat and get to know each other outside the game, so feel free to introduce yourself here in this thread.
Hopefully this is the beginning of something very cool, and we're especially excited to start getting thoughts and feedback from our early players. Looking forward to drawing in some chains with you all. -John K.
Hi!! I'm Deena. I didn't know you were the creator, but I have enjoyed your drawings and think I'm following you, or something. I used to play another drawing game on FB, but enjoy this very much right now. I like the concept (and have a board game similar to this). Having it open to more people makes it more fun. I would like to see an option for making your starter be immediately public (rather than having to wait 24 hours for friend play) if you want. Also, there seem to be too few games being played. More gold tickets, perhaps one per day, then you can buy additional? Cool game. Love the different medium options (although I'm not sure how to progress and get them. I have lots of stars and have played a lot, but still seem to be level 1?) Um.. Yeah, so I'm a 38 year old mom who enjoys games and art. Big surprise there. :) Having an option to avoid language/vulgarity/mature content is a big plus. Keep up the good work!!
Hi Deena, thanks for your excellent feedback and welcome to the game. You're lucky to be one of the first few players the game as every had, so you can have a big impact on how it evolves from here!
I see the problem, you need to level up by clicking on your rank (the pencil) on the main screen. It should be pulsing and flashing. We will fix this to make it more obvious. You're not the first person to run into this confusing indicator!
The game is still in Beta, so we're keeping the game fairly small at the moment by not pushing a lot of new players into the game. That will change fairly soon, but for now it's just the players you see regularly and their friends that they invite. Feel free to spread the word around, though. Our tiny test server can probably handle a few hundred more players and still run well.
We've actually got a fix in the works for golden tickets coming. Right now you get them based on dice roll (so think about it like you get a ticket every time you roll a one). But it should actually work like drawing cards from a small deck, where one of the cards has a golden ticket on it. Look for that change in the next couple weeks, which should even out the odds of getting a golden ticket.
Thanks again for playing and helping to make the game better!!
Yeah. So I tried clicking the pencil. I tried clicking my 99+ star (which IS pulsing/flashing). I tried clicking all of it. Sometimes it freezes up, but it never levels up. :( My version says Alpha Build. Is that my problem?? Accessing with Google Chrome.
We'll be adding a feature so it levels you up automatically, but for now you have to click on the flashing rank icon (or your profile photo in the top-left).
I finally got it!! I had to click on the stars that were given me. I didn't get that part. I clicked the pencil, then the 99+ stars, but hadn't realized the necessity of clicking the individual stars given me.
Hiii everyone my name is Lorna, I just started playing this game today, So far i really like it and i've even got my bff playing the game too. I think its a pretty cool concept and i cant wait for more of my friends to start playing it too. Not much to tell about me but i do like answering questions. Hope to see you all around...
I = Noxious. I thought I was going to like this game due to another game like it I used to play all the time a couple years ago... but this game's tutorial told me to click on the first game on the screen because it needed zero people and could be branched from. So I did and it says I have no tickets to create a game... so I cant do anything at all... someone wanna tell me um... WHY? Before I delete this and find something else to play? Thanks. And nice to meet y''all
hi I found this game by accident last night and love the idea - but have I got the right idea? Someone draws a picture or writes a comment and the next person either writes what they think when seeing the drawing or draws what the comment inspires in them? Checking out the game again this morning I see a comment "slt" (shortened french "hi!") so does that mean the next person to "play" has to draw "slt"? I'm not a good artist but love the idea of seeing how peoples minds work. Someone gave me a star - very nice of them! How can I give stars? Bye for now!
Hi there, Milenko here (AKA Ferdinand Kreozot), another one of the devs. Watching and taking part in the games is more and more fun. Cheers to everyone.
Hey, I just recently started playing this game and I like it a lot. I get particularly frustrated though by people that seem to just be drawing or captioning whatever they want, sometimes just gibberish or scribbles. One player thinks the point is to fill our profiles with pictures with no regards to anyone else playing. Is there any way to flag these players so I can avoid games that they are involved in?
Hi there..... I am Sandra. I use to really enjoy sketching and painting years ago, not so much UNTIL I discovered this neat website / game that inspires me to do so. I can not recall when i first started on here, but I know it has not been a month yet........ Time flies by so fast! By the way, I am a 48 year old woman...... I enjoy landscaping, and I am a chef. I am also a mother...... raised one ( stepson / married with 2 school aged kids ) and have another one a smart, creative teenage daughter. I hope to continue creating cool and beautiful images or pictures as this website progresses. Have a good day! ~ Sandra ~
@UAPisces, glad youre enjoying the game! We've had a lot of new people in so the amount of junk drawings has been higher than it will be over time. The best way to get a good chain is to follow lots of people who do good phrases/drawings, then invite them to your game. We might make a way to limit invites by level too so new users cant mess up a game.
@Sandra hi and welcome to the game, that's awesome it's inspired you to start sketching again! Great to hear.
Hi, I love this game and enjoy playing it... EXCEPT when people ( adults supposedly) draw explicit pics and children have started the game or are a part of the game... I know you have an adults only option but not everyone who should use it does so.. Other than that it is great fun!!
Hi Everyone! Stephanie here. Just wanted to say "hi". JohnK, excellent game! No probs, found it easy to understand. So, I expect the higher you go in levels the more choices in "tools" for the drawings you have? Having a ball with it! Thanks!
@Kerry yes, once it's flagged twice (or instantly, if its a self flag) the drawing will be censored. Unfortunately with this system sometimes bad drawings still get through. If it becomes a big problem we'll have to take measures like banning people who dont flag their adult drawings, or not showing new players work until they've played awhile without getting flags. On the other hand, I like that players can make 'adult' drawings if they want (if its with your friends and thats how you joke around who cares), so I'm glad to see most people are self-flagging drawings. Thanks for the feedback, we'll keep an eye on this.
Hi @Stephanie , glad you like the game! Yep levelling up lets you start different chain styles, and we'll add more later too.
Hi I am having an issue with my bonus game tickets.. I receive them but they don't show up in the bonus game total..that remains at zero. My husband plays also and he receives his.. I have never gotten one, any reason for this that I may be overlooking? Cheers.
PS I absolutely agree with your answer to my last question... Explicit can be fun.. at the right time and in the right context.. I just think if a child has started the game it isn't appropriate...common sense really.
@Kerry hm bonus tickets or gold tickets? How are you receiving them, buying them? or leveling up or getting free golden tickets randomly when you finish a game? That's great that you're playing with your husband :)
Howdy y'all, I'm Gabriel Gideon, but I go by Giddie. I have absolutely fallen in love with this game. I am a small time crafter and doodler of doodles, and its like this game was made for me :) I am really having so much fun with the creative spark it gives me.
Great to hear! Welcome to the game Gideon. Saw your post on sketching too, I'm hoping this game will do a lot to connect people like that (artists and otherwise)
Well, as this is my monthyversary and I'm still here, I suppose I'd better formally introduce myself. I always loved drawing as a kid and that love never went away'. For a while I taught Graphic Design in high school, back before computers when everything was done with Pantones, coloured pencil crayons, pen and ink and pencil and I've done a few water colours that sold :) Even so, I would call my ability adequate rather than good. I love that Scribblywits stretches me. The media are not easy to use and it gets me thinking. Also, I love to put a twist on what has gone before especially with the captions, rather than just stating the obvious. And if the odd innuendo can be squeezed in, so much the better. ;) So, I guess this isn't going to be one of those "play it for a few days and forget it" kind of games for me. I'm really looking forward to how it develops.
Hi, Giddie :D Yeah, that would be me ;) Love your stuff and your style. I agree with what you said in one of the other discussions, animations right now can get tedious and/or painful LOL I frequently run out of steam part way through and finish in a hurry. I would have loved to do more with the waterfall but, well, I got bored :D
Hey guys, been about a month for me as well, so I guess I'll follow in Peter's shoes. My name is Matt and I am certainly not an addict. I just can't live with out Scribbly Wits in my veins.
I work in an Emergency Animal Hospital, but have been drawing for as long as I can remember. I had a brief stint in college as an art major, until the teacher failed me for not shading deep enough on an abstract 3D design of my own machination. I switched over to film at that point. In addition to the animal work, I do freelance graphic design and film editing.
I used to do a lot of flash animation, so the animated segments really intrigue me here. my favorite medium so far is the pixel art. I do wish it had a deeper palette, but my best reviewed work is in that medium. I absolutely love this game. I never thought at the beginning that I would end up buying a couple packs of blue tickets, but I have so much fun following games with you guys that I couldn't resist. Thanks to John for making and playing the such a great game. Also thank you Peter and Giddie, you guys are two of the main artists that make this game so much fun for me.
Welcome guys, been enjoying your work in the game and glad you're enjoying playing it! Great to have your feedback as well as we try to grow this game into something bigger.
Hi, I'm Amy. I've been drawing since I was a kid and I have always been told I was good at what I do. This last month though, I have been in a terrible dry spell. Haven't even had the urge to pick up a pencil and draw, because it seemed like I was just drawing the same thing over and over again. I'm also the only artist I know of in my circles (pretty small circle but still) so it becomes frustrating.
A few days ago, I was looking for Facebook games that would be fun to play. After a while, I decided to look up drawing games just for the heck of it and found this one. At first I was confused on how the game worked but after I finished a game or two I got the hang of it. I got a follow on the first day! It was great and getting stars was the rush of it because it's like people are rating your stuff, and I for one have never had many likes, favorites, or such on other sites. The leveling up confused me at first too, but now I'm Level 10 with 15 followers and just over 300 stars. It really helped boost my confidence in my art (which is rather lackey).
I love the mechanics of the game. The whole "drawing to phrase to drawing to phrase" is genius! It's also a great way to get the old creative wheels spinning. Also, If you just don't feel like drawing one day, you can choose to just describe others' art. In fact, you don't even have to be an artist to play this game. You just sit back and tell people what to draw and they do it! LOL Either way, this has actually got me out of my dry spell and I am drawing like crazy. So, thanks!!!! My favorite medium so far is paint and crayon, but I am pretty good at working with the other ones. I haven't had the chance to try pixel yet but I am looking forward to my first attempt. The replay animation is my favorite feature. I am one of those artists who gets addicted just watching themselves and others draw, and watching the drawings come to life.
I have a few minor issues with this game that are easy for me to overlook.
1. (This isn't really an issue but a sad truth) I do so many games a day I run out of tickets rather quickly. Plus I get invited to like 50 games and only have 10 bonus tickets in which to choose wisely. LOL
2. I can't delete the notifications. Since I am so used to doing that on other games; it's like checking your email and sending stuff to trash folder, you eventually end up doing it out of habit. Plus i had to search through all the results to find the one i specifically wanted that was down the list. I just think it'd be more organized to be able to delete all the old messages.
3. This issue I could actually get over but others might consider it a major issue. In the paint medium, there's no Color Picker. Meaning, when you change the color and then need to go back to it, you have to go back through the process of finding that exact color. FlockDraw also does this and it can be frustrating if you can't find the color you want quickly. I, however, think i'm going to just memorize how i got the color to begin with. It's good for the learning process and mistakes are what make the art unique. The more interesting the mistakes, the more interesting the art. I'm already getting better at finding old colors again.
4. (I'm just going to call this Issues & Suggestions) My suggestion is: In the sorting of your gallery, you have "recent" and "popular". There could also be a sorting to separate the pictures from the phrases, since some people like the art or phrase portion of the game more than the other. Or even a sorting of "your" favorites as a sort of highlight art of your gallery. The best of you. Moving on.
5. A main chat. Each game has it's own chatbox and you can use a bonus ticket to unlock a chat with one person, but what if you wanted to talk to everyone? For example: Ask how certain stuff works before you mess it up to begin with? Or just want to say hi to other artists and let 'em know they're awesome? Ask advice on animating or other art techniques? I realize this could get spammy, but It would be a good way to start connecting with people, especially if you're new. *raises hand*
6. The option to open private games. So you could just invite specific people to your game. It would be good because you'd experience less breaks in the chain from people who just draw and phrase random stuff. And if you just wanted it to be used for a family night. So you don't have to stop the game because some other person jumped in the game before your family member did. (This isn't specific. I am rambling. i'll stop. lol)
One question and I'm done for now. (If you are still reading this, SORRY! This is longer than I meant it to be) I haven't figured this out yet because i haven't paid attention. Does it give a daily amount of tickets? If so, what timezone does the day go by?
Anyway, altogether this is a great game. It's got a nice setup, a fun play, and a friendly community. I am gonna keep on playing! Especially if I hit another dry patch.
See ya.
Omg. This is gonna be the longest post on this thread.
@Amy wow that's an awesome list of feedback, thanks a ton for that! Super helpful. Some comments: - You said it took you awhile to understand how the game works, any ideas how we could have explained it better in the opening games? I think a lot of people have this problem, not sure what the sticking point is though. 1 - tickets. Yeah we're trying to find the right balance between letting people play lots and connect with the community and making enough on the game to run the servers, add new features, etc. You do get tickets as you level up, but the whole thing is a delicate balancing act. 2- I've heard this a couple of times, I'll add a task for it. 3 - Agreed on the color picker, I think an eyedropper tool is needed. Or a recent-colors list maybe. 4 - Good idea. Some way to customize your profile more I would like to do. I want to have more trophies and stuff you can earn here too. 5 - Chat room, was just discussing this with the team at lunch. The way the community is connecting we definitely need something like this. 6 - Private games. You can actually do this already! Create a new game and mark it 'invite only'. - Tickets, its not daily, you get ones at the start and when you level up, and then you can buy more. You have 3 free slots you can use, and they open up when the games in them finish.
Thats awesome the game has you drawing again. Thanks again for the feedback and glad you like our game.
@JohnK I think the confusion, when beginning this game, comes from other drawing games. Because their system (which seems to be repeated a lot) is where something is drawn (by the computer or people) and everyone guesses what that ONE picture is. Whoever gets the answer right and so forth wins and/or gets to draw the next picture.
Here, they come on and see pictures AND phrases and aren't exactly sure what the phrases are for (at least that was me). I'm not really sure when the idea clicked though. I think it was after I realized no one could see the pictures and phrases before them. Someone wouldn't know the person who put the phrase “blue monkey” was actually describing another person's picture, not telling the next person to draw a blue monkey.
When trying to show my dad how the game was played (because he was asking why I found this game so fun), I tried to explain it best I could and he summed it up better than I could. It's like a chain of gossip. Each person interprets the gossip differently and over time the original gossip is changed so much it means something completely different by the end. I think if people realized this sooner the game might make a whole lot more sense to them.
I have an idea for how to explain the game that isn't as annoying as a starter tutorial (since people really just want to start playing as soon as possible instead of clicking everything they are told to). What about just placing a “How To Play” button, say, right above the place it says “Your Games” or above the “Visit Forums” button? That way it isn't forcing them to learn what to do but it is there if they need additional instruction. Maybe if they just entered the game, there would be a blinking arrow pointing to the “How To Play” button or something? (Just don't make it mandatory to push it.) When they do click the button, it can come up with an example game for them that was made specifically designed for them to understand? Or have the comment section of that game say exactly what your suppose to do? Just some thoughts.
Anyway, thanks for the reply! It answered a few questions I had about the game that I wouldn't have known otherwise. I hope some of what I said helps make the game better. It really is worth the effort. As I said earlier, most "art" games are more like charades. This is uniquely distinctive, the only game like it that I know of.
Thats a really good idea. I will see what we can do.
Yes the way I describe it is 'like the game telephone, but with pictures', and I think most people can kind of get it from that. The biggest problem is describing the game to people and they go 'oh, yeah I've played Pictionary, I know how it works'... welllll it's a bit different actually. But yes I think a how to play button is a great idea, let them learn at their leisure. Everyone hates those forced tutorials, I want to mess around a bit myself before I get into figuring out how it all works.
Hi My name is Casey I share this facebook Account with my wife Alysia. We both had been playing at first but I seem to have taken over as I have become addicted.
When I was a kid I always bugged my parents by asking them what I should draw. I would always turn down their ideas until I could picture something funny they would describe. after a while it was a competition for them to see if I could draw the complicated scene they would describe. This game brings me back as I think about some of the captions and possible creative ways to portray them. when I started this game I would finish a drawing in 3 to 5 mins but now that I am hooked I might spend a half hour working on one.
My suggestions would be more tools for blending and a way to make the canvas full screen or larger. more detail would be fun but the large tools and small canvas sometimes make it hard.
my artistic background is freelance muralist and I like to illustrate childrens books.
Hi, my name is Alex, and I am an addict. I've been doing Picture This/Scribbly Wits since a week or two before the name change and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.
A bit about my artistic background: I've been drawing for about as long as I can remember. If you peel back a few layers of paint at my childhood home, you'll find crayon portraits of Batman on a few of the walls. In college, I minored in Fine Arts (majored in Communications), and served as art director for a time on the campus graphic literature magazine (read: comic book), HOFSTRA INK/INKWELL. I do consider myself more of a doodler than an actual artist (especially compared to some of the other talents here!) I actually write and draw left-handed, but I mouse around right-handed, which is possibly why some of my pix look so squiggly.
Some of my likes and dislikes: My favorite medium is paint, because it's the most forgiving and flexible, followed by chalk, because it's fun to do animations with it. My least favorite medium is crayon, because I can't seem to make anything look good with it, although some of you are VERY successful making great crayon art!
I hate being the last person in a chain that ends before it reaches twelve links, but I LOVE starting a chain that completes before it even goes wide. I do get a mini-thrill when one of my pix makes it onto the startup screen.
I like drawing and captioning pop culture, especially 80s pop culture, which probably now dates my age. I'm not opposed to drawing naughty bits, and quite enjoy it actually, but only if I can put a funny or otherwise interesting spin on it. Sex for sex's sake bores me (artistically, not in real life ;-)).
Finally, shout outs to some of the people that I'm a huge fan of: Peter, Maria, Kerry, John K., Miha, Sandra, Ashley, Javier. Seeing your stuff inspires me and pushes me to try to make my stuff better! Thanks! And if I didn't mention you by name, don't think that I don't appreciate your work as well!
That's it for now. See you on Scribbly Wits!
- Alex
PS: One other thing I dislike is when I prematurely submit a picture (or a post) and then realize I wasn't done with it yet. SW should have an edit button (like this forum has, which is how I got this last comment in)...
Hi Alex We've met amongst the chains ;oD and I have to say I really like the way you try to put a spin on things a lot of the time. That's what this game is about for me rather than just copying or stating the obvious. That is artistry, right there. I really like your stuff too and enjoy seeing you around :o)
Hi everyone. My name is Loredana, I have 26 years and I am from Romania. I graduated from the Faculty of Food Engineering and are currently looking for a job. I have only words of praise about this game that I occupy a great deal of time every day. I enjoy painting as a hobby, the more I like nail painting.
I have a proposal regarding this game: I would like to have the option to download the paintings that you realize in my computer.
Ps I think I became addicted to this game and always expect new themes drawing!
Thanks Alex, I can delight your eyes with my paintings. I'm a fan of many people in this game, including Peter, Maria I admire for their ideas of drawing and I must admit that there are drawings that amuse me.
Hi and welcome Alex and Loredana, been a lot of fun playing with you both, great drawings.
@Alex edits after someone has continued the chain would probably be unavailable, but maybe before that...
@Lory you can share to FB currently, which will let you save drawings if you find them in your feed. You can also 'copy url' on a finished chain and get to the image that way. We're going to add some more ways to share too.
Wow----- I never got around to reading pass Amy ' s response until now. Thank you Alex for those kind words...... I do have a brother who is an artist, but I do not come near to his level of experience. I enjoy * Peter's work / painting, drawings, ( they remind me of my brother ) * Miha ( Lory ) all your creative drawings / paintings also make me smile. I enjoy Alex & Maria ( Maria is one creative person! ) I like Amy' s, Colleen, ANA & of course I could not forget Kerry...... she was one of the first I admired when I started playing this game.
